Today we are going to talk about how we can avoid the battle of sin just by guarding our eyes.
Consider the seriousness of a battle or war. Consider the pain and great loss in a battle. What if I told you this could all be avoided. This could all be stopped before the battle even begins.
Much of our life we are fighting a battle, a battle against sin and against temptation. What if we avoid the battle all together and this will allow us to avoid the pain of the battle as well.
This battle starts with our eyes.
Today we are going to talk about how we can avoid the battle of sin just by guarding our eyes.
This lesson came to me from a verse in the Book of Joshua… 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them;
Now, This is Achan speaking here, Joshua the leader of Israel has asked all the people who it was that sinned against God and caused the children of Israel to lose the war against Ai. Now Achan has come before Joshua and in his explanation to Joshua on why he committed this sin Achan starts with the phrase “When I saw…”
This whole issue, this whole battle and the pain and loss came about because Achan “SAW” something. If Achan had kept his eyes on God and followed God’s plan this whole thing could have been avoided. If Achan had guarded his eyes, none of this would have happened.
There are so many hardships, so much pain in our life that all came because we “SAW” something. It is so important for us to guard our eyes!
The Bible has a lot to say about our eyes, in fact the word eye or eyes appears in the Bible over 500 times! God cares a whole lot about what we allow into our eyes. Our eyes are one of the gateways into our brain.
God says in Matthew chapter 5 that if our eyes cause us to stumble it would be better if we didn’t even have eyes.
We are told in Proverbs 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
We need to guard our eyes from wickedness, we all know this, but we also need to keep our eyes away from distractions.
This verse in Proverbs talks about keeping our eyes focused straight in front of us and if we can do this, we will avoid many mistakes and temptations and pain along the way.
This is why horses wear blinders. When a horse can look all around and see everything, he gets distracted very easily, every shiny thing, anything that moves will distract the horse and this horse will either walk off course or loose pace and not make it to the destination at the right time.
We need to put blinders on us as we walk through life. It is too easy to get distracted, if we start looking around, we can easily get off tract. We need to look straight ahead and keep our eyes focused on God.
Think about David, he got distracted, his eyes were not in the right place… 2 Samuel 11:2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself;
David could have avoided this sin and hardship in his life if his eyes were guarded.
It is so important for us to guard our eyes; this will help us stay on the right path and help us to be able to keep serving the Lord.
We can also build a sweeter and closer relationship with our heavenly Father if we keep our eye fixed on Him. We will be able to do so much more for God if we are focused on Him and we guard our eyes.
We can avoid the battles in our life altogether if our eyes are guarded.
