I think this is a simple fact that most of us already knew but I want to consider for a few minutes today that in every decision we make “God already Knew” what we would choose.
Today’s topic comes from a verse in Genesis that I was reading recently… Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Now God is speaking with Adam, this is immediately after Adam and Eve sinned by eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil when they knew that God told them not to.
A few verses before this God says… “Where art thou?” talking to Adam. Again, God knew exactly where Adam was.
The Bible says in 1 John 3:20 that God “knoweth all things.”
The Bible says in Psalms 147:5 that God’s “understanding is infinite.”
God knows everything, He knew everything from the beginning. So that leads me to ask, Why is God asking where Adam is and Why is God asking Adam what he did? If God already knew everything… why is He asking?
Adam was faced with a choice when Eve offered him the fruit and God already knew what decision Adam would make.
Adam was faced with a decision to hide or to go make things right with God. Adam chose to hide and God knew right where he was hiding but Why did God ask where he was?
In all of this there was choices and even though God knows what choices Adam was going to make God still let Adam make the choice. Then God asks questions He already knows the answers to.
God does this… for Adams benefit. God was giving Adam a chance to come clean, to make things right. God didn’t ask because He needed to know, He already knew, God asked for Adam to know something.
In this case, that something, is that he messed up and there is a proper way to make things right that God shows them after this passage. God asks to help Adam know something, to help Adam learn something.
God already knew what the answers were because He already knew what Adam did. I find it very interesting that God asks the question even though he had no need to ask. The question was for Adams benefit.
We are faced with decisions every day and God already knows if we are going to make the right decision or not but still, we find verses in the Bible like…
James 4:17 – Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
1 John 1:8 – If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Galatians 5:16 – This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
1 John 5:17 – All unrighteousness is sin:
Gal 6:4 But let every man prove his own work,
2 Cor 13:5 Examine yourselves,
Lam 3:40 Let us search and try our ways,
And there are so many more verses about sin and examining ourself to see if we have done wrong. So, if God already knew we were going to sin why would He ask us to examine ourself?
God is doing this for our benefit. God knows that if He asks us in His Word to examine ourselves then we can learn what wrong we have done and we can make it right and even avoid it in the future.
Next time we come to a verse in the Bible about sin or examining ourself remember God put that there not because He needed to know if we sinned but because He loves us enough to ask us about sin for our benefit.
Next time we come to a verse like this in our Bible reading, let us remember that God wants us to have a clear and right relationship with Him and He wants us to grow.
That is why God asks us these questions, it is for our benefit, it is for us to grow and it is so we can have a sweet relationship with God.
