Servant of the Lord Podcast – Episode 12 – All His Heart

heart drawing on a sandy beach

This episode is a devotional on the heart of a servant.

From this episode:

Usually I focus on “Service” and this is because I just love serving God so much it is something that is always on my heart BUT today, we are not focusing on the service part so much, today we are going to focus on the heart of the servant.

The idea of this devotion came to me while reading 2 Chronicles 31:21  And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

Okay, lets look back and see what we are talking about here, lets see what all this service is in the verse…

Well we are talking about King Hezekiah in this verse and…

King Hezekiah became the king of Judah. King Hezekiah did many wonderful things. He cleansed the temple, he restored worship in the temple, and he set in order the priests for service to the Lord, and many other things.

King Hezekiah loved God and he loved serving God, he tried to do right and good. In the verse before our main verse we have a testimony about the character of King Hezekiah. 2 Chronicles 31:20  And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.

Hezekiah loved God, he served God and tried to do good and right and follow truth. Although we are not focusing on the service that King Hezekiah did, I do want to mention all this so that we understand what our main verse is referencing.

Our verse says the phrase… “he did it with all his heart”. Hezekiah wasn’t doing half-hearted work. He wasn’t just doing it to look good or because he felt like he had to. He was doing it with ALL HIS HEART!

I love this for two reasons… First, he loved God so much! I love when people fall in love with God. I love when people give their whole self to God, and they’re “all in” for God! God is so amazing, wonderful, excellent and so deserving of all our heart! I love seeing someone give all their heart to God because anything less, wouldn’t be enough.

The Second reason I love this is… Just think of how much more work was done and how much better it was done because he did it with ALL his heart!

Let’s be honest, we know when our heart is not in something, and we know that the finish product is not as good as it could have been!

This is why coaches ask their players for 110%, they want the best. I want to be honest with you though… I don’t like this phrase at all, give 110%. First of all, that’s not possible and setting an impossible bar that no one will reach and they may even get discouraged and second of all it makes real, full, 100% effort, less meaningful. I think this phrase reduces the impact of giving the real 100% but I understand it’s purpose.

I was on my high school basketball team; I could tell when we played against players that didn’t really love playing like I did. Their heart wasn’t in it and you could tell. Well, when I was a teenager I loved basketball, probably way too much.

I gave 100% the entire time I was on the court, even during practice. I would end almost every game feeling drained and tired or weak and even sometimes my legs would be cramping the whole fourth quarter of the game. I tried my best, I ran as fast as I could, I jumped as high as I could, I did the best I could every second I was out there.

This allowed me to be a pretty good player, now let me tell you the truth, I was not the tallest on the team, I was not the fastest, I was not the most talented but my effort made up for all of that!

I was only able to give 100% the entire time because ALL of my Heart was in it! I played with all of my heart! I was able to do so much more than expected because I played with all of my heart!

Now, what if we serve the Lord this way? What if we give all of our heart, 100% of the time, what if we did things with all of our heart even when practicing or preparing. Not just trying to get through things, not being distracted, not just winging it, not doing it half-hearted.

Just imagine if we did everything with all of our heart!

We could reach more lost souls.

We could encourage our brothers and sisters better.

We could help more of those who have turned away from God find their way back.

We could have a stronger and better relationship with our heavenly Father.

We could please Him by giving Him All of our Heart!

Let’s serve the Lord with all of our heart, it is important for us to keep serving the Lord! We need to stay busy serving the Lord and we need to make sure we do it with all our heart!

Next time we are serving we need to look internally; we need to look at ourselves and check to make sure we are really doing it with our whole heart and if not, we need to stop and pray to God and ask Him to help us do it with our whole heart!

King Hezekiah is a great example to us not just for us to learn to serve the Lord but to do it like he did, “with all his heart”, Let’s serve God with all our hearts!
